Sadness
Weighted Calm
Quiet negative valence. Weight without drama, and without the specific loss that grief requires. Sadness is the condition; grief is the response to an event.
The word
Old English sæd meant full, sated, the same root as the Latin satis, enough. Across centuries of use the word drifted from fullness to weariness to sorrow. The drift is honest: sadness still feels less like emptiness than like having had too much of something.
The feeling
A low, even heaviness with no urgency in it. The body slows, the voice drops, the face loosens; effort becomes visible in tasks that used to be invisible. Time thickens without stopping. Nothing specific has to be wrong, which distinguishes it from grief and makes it harder to explain, including to yourself.
Against its neighbours
Grief is sadness with an address, organized around a named loss; sadness needs no event and often cannot produce one when asked. Melancholy is sadness fused to beauty, almost pleasurable to inhabit. Plain sadness has no such compensation; it is the unlit version.
In the work
A low, even field. Nothing collapses and nothing recovers. The whole frame sits slightly below where it would rest.
No work carries Sadness yet. The element is named and the table is not finished.
These prints carry its family.

Weight On My Faith
How big, actually.
Drawn to scale against a person of average height. Every size is a 4:5 rectangle, the same proportion as the work itself, so nothing is cropped to fit.
Sizes are the printed image. Framed works add the moulding around that. Standard US shipping is free at every size.
Paper, or canvas.
Same image, same inks. What changes is the surface it is printed on. Tap either one.
