Joy is the dominant charge: surplus everywhere, diamonds thrown rather than kept, pleasure with energy left over.
Overflow
Positive charge with surplus. Pleasure with energy to spare, which is the surplus that separates joy from satisfaction. Satisfaction is met; joy overflows.
Through the Old French joie, from the Latin gaudium, out of gaudere, to rejoice. The word has meant roughly this for as long as it has existed, which is rare; most emotion words drift. Joy's stability suggests the experience has never needed reinterpretation.
Energy with nowhere it is required to go. The body lightens and wants motion: the jump, the laugh, the call made for no reason. Time speeds up and attention widens, taking in more of the room than usual. The surplus is what identifies it; joy always has more than the moment strictly needs.
Satisfaction is a need met exactly, nothing left over; joy is the overflow, pleasure exceeding its container. Ecstasy goes one further and dissolves the container entirely. Joy keeps the self intact, just brimming.
More colour than the subject requires. The excess spills into the field around the figure rather than staying on it.
Joy is the dominant charge: surplus everywhere, diamonds thrown rather than kept, pleasure with energy left over.
Joy carries half the weight: frolic with surplus energy, pleasure that spills past what the clouds can hold.
