I'M EXACTLY WHERE I NEED TO BE
Gratitude turns the past circumstances into given-ness, every condition that shaped the self received as a gift.
Earned Weight
Recognition of given-ness. A debt that warms where a debt should weigh. Gratitude requires an outside: something arrived that was not earned.
Latin gratus, pleasing, through the medieval gratitudo. The same root gives grace and gratis: the family of words for the unearned gift. English took it up in the sixteenth century, and moral philosophers have argued ever since about whether it is a feeling or a duty.
A warmth with a direction: it points at someone. The chest loosens, and something that could have registered as debt registers instead as being held. It sharpens attention to the particular: this gift, this timing, this person. Left alone it wants expression; unexpressed gratitude has a faint ache to it.
Relief is thanks that something ended; gratitude is thanks that something arrived. Admiration looks up at excellence from a distance; gratitude has been personally reached by it.
Light that clearly comes from somewhere. The source is off-frame and the figure is turned toward it.
Gratitude turns the past circumstances into given-ness, every condition that shaped the self received as a gift.
Gratitude shares the load-bearing role: the dawn arrives as something given, overwhelming light received as debt that feels like warmth.
Gratitude reframes the frustrations, each failure recounted as a debt that quietly converted into understanding.
Gratitude is the register of the whole passage, debt that reads as warmth.
