Interest
The Lean
Approach motivation without urgency. The drawn-toward state, sustained and unhurried. Interest is what curiosity looks like when it has time.
The word
Latin interesse, to be between: inter, between, esse, to be. In English it was money and law first, a stake, a share, a claim; the feeling was named after the stake. To be interested is, literally, to have something between you and the thing: a connection in which its outcome has become partly yours.
The feeling
The lean. Attention settles onto the object with weight but without hurry, and time becomes generous. Effort stops registering as effort; an hour passes inside a paragraph or a problem and leaves energy behind instead of taking it. It is the quietest of the appetites, and the only one that grows by being fed.
Against its neighbours
Craving needs and cannot rest; interest wants and can wait. Entrancement seizes and immobilizes; interest leaves you your hands, which is why interest, not entrancement, is the state work gets done in.
In the work
Every line agrees on a direction. Nothing in the frame is dramatic, and the whole arrangement is angled toward something outside it.
No work carries Interest yet. The element is named and the table is not finished.
