Presence

Weight-of-Now

A WORD ENGLISH NEVER MADE · READ THE CUSTOMS HOUSE

The weight of now. Full occupancy of the present moment, without the mind reaching forward or back.

The word

Plain English, but the plainness hides how rare the state is. Contemplative traditions across centuries built entire disciplines, breath by breath, to reach what the word names casually: actually being where you are.

The feeling

Full occupancy of the moment. The commentary stops, past and future release their claims, and the current second widens until it has room to stand in. Colors saturate slightly. It costs nothing and arrives rarely, mostly when the body is fully engaged and the stakes are real.

Against its neighbours

Calm is an absence of disturbance; presence is a positive density, and can coexist with fear. Stillness is the room going quiet. Presence is you, finally arriving in it.

In the work

The absence of narrative. A work carrying it does not imply a before or an after. It only insists on here.
