Surprise

Displace

Orienting response to violated expectation. The abrupt reframe when the world turns out to be arranged differently than assumed. Surprise is the shortest of all the states and carries no valence of its own.

The word

From Old French surprendre, to overtake: sur, over, and prendre, to seize. For centuries it was a military word; a surprise was the taking of a position before its defenders knew the war had arrived. The emotion keeps the structure: something takes you before your model of the world can object.

The feeling

The briefest of the emotions: a fraction of a second of full stop. Eyes widen, breath catches, every ongoing process pauses while the model of the world is torn up and redrafted. It has no valence of its own; it is the hinge, and what follows, delight, fear, laughter, gives the moment its color afterward. By the time you can name it, it has already become something else.

Against its neighbours

Wonder stays with the unexplained and wants it to continue; surprise is over before wanting begins. Confusion is a reading that will not resolve; surprise is a reading that resolved instantly, just not into what was expected.

In the work

A rule broken once. One element in the wrong register, at the wrong scale, or in the wrong place, so that the eye returns to it involuntarily.

No work carries Surprise yet. The element is named and the table is not finished.
