Alert watching. Readiness before the event, sustained without being spent. Anticipation faces forward like hope but makes no promise about the outcome.

The word

From the Latin anticipare, to take beforehand, from ante and capere, to seize. For centuries anticipating something meant acting on it early, paying or answering ahead of time. The word for the feeling kept the grasping: attention reaching forward to hold an event that has not arrived.

The feeling

A forward lean in the whole system. Pulse slightly up, senses sharpened, the present moment thinned out to make room for the one coming. Time runs slow in a pleasant way, the way it does at a door about to open. The state can outshine the event itself; arrival regularly pays less than the watching did.

Against its neighbours

Hope commits to one outcome and rises or breaks with it; anticipation commits only to watching. Dread is the same forward lean toward something feared, which is why the two feel identical in the body until the object is named.

In the work

A held gaze. The composition is arranged around an attention, and the thing being watched is usually outside the frame.
