Hiraeth

The Welsh Ache

A WORD ENGLISH NEVER MADE · READ THE CUSTOMS HOUSE

Welsh. Homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never existed. Grief for a place, not a person.

The word

Welsh, built on hir, long. Centuries of poetry and emigration made it a national word: the longing of a people for a country that kept changing behind them. English borrowed it because nothing native does its work.

The feeling

Homesickness sharpened by impossibility. The home in question is not on any map: it is a version of a place, or a place that never existed, or the person you were when you last stood there. It aches low and steady, never in waves, and returning does not cure it, because the destination is a time.

Against its neighbours

Homesickness ends when you go home. Hiraeth begins there, when the place no longer matches the memory. Saudade holds an absence with some sweetness; hiraeth is heavier on the grief. Nostalgia visits the past; hiraeth is exiled from it.

In the work

Distance treated tenderly. Horizons that recede, architecture half-remembered, landscape carrying more feeling than the figure standing in it.

Hiraeth is held in the archive. These prints carry its family.
