Detachment

The Unremarkable

Disengagement as protection. Affect at half-mast, held there deliberately. Detachment is chosen, where numbness is imposed, and that choice is the whole difference.

The word

From the French detacher, to unfasten; attach is usually traced to an old word for a stake, so to detach is to pull up the stake and stand loose of the ground. The mystics treated the manoeuvre as an achievement: a treatise attributed to Meister Eckhart ranks detachment above humility, above even love.

The feeling

The volume is turned down on purpose and the hand stays on the dial. Events reach you with the specifics intact and the urgency removed; you can describe what is happening precisely, which is part of the method. The body is calm the way a closed shop is calm. Some part of attention is always spent on the maintenance, and it can be felt as a faint effort behind the ease.

Against its neighbours

Numbness is the same flatness with the choice removed: the system shut the door itself. Equanimity stays engaged with the disturbance and pays for its steadiness; detachment lowers the stakes instead of holding them.

In the work

A subject rendered without emphasis. Something is happening and the piece declines to treat it as an event.
