The Maker v. The Table
Docket 2026-0809 · two days in the study
Eighty cells went in. Seventy-five survived.
One law decides who gets a cell.
For months this rule lived in my head, so it came out a little different every time someone asked why not X. If it comes out different every time, it is not doing any work. I wrote it in one line, and every ruling that follows was made under it.
An element is a state a work can put a viewer into.
Felt, not enacted · experiential, not evaluative
More than emotion. The table holds orientations, Craving, Interest, Trust, Anticipation, Devotion, a condition, Solitude, and cognitive states, Confusion, Boredom. All of those are things a picture can do to you, so all of them belong.
Behaviors, virtues, vices. Conduct is not experience. A vice describes what a body does. The table names what a viewer feels while watching it happen.
The rare column, by design. Apophenia, Koyaanisqatsi, Wabi-Sabi get in on an exemption I wrote for them. Words English never made get a looser door, and I would rather say that than pretend the rule never bent. The whole rare column is walked through in The Customs House.

The costume words.
FoldedRage went first. It was Anger wearing a costume. Its definition read "Anger at its most consuming," and the notation already says consuming with a subscript. An2 and Rage are one claim written twice. Teach a reader the subscript, then hand them Rage, and the first thing they learn is that the grammar bends when I want it to. The subscript grammar is set out in The Periodic Wall.
Depression-StateSustained quiet negative
· the only clinical hyphenate in the table, a diagnostic label where every neighbor carries a felt description. Zero works
Ineffable · an English word sitting in the row reserved for words English lacks. Zero works
Case file No. 02 · docket 2026-0809 · cell No. 2
The one that argued.
RedefinedEcstasy had the same problem. Its definition read "Joy that overwhelms containment," which is Joy with a longer name, and it carried zero works. By the letter of the rule it should have folded with the rest.
It held because volume is not what it measures. Rage fell for saying Anger louder, the same axis with more on it, which the subscript already writes. Ekstasis means standing outside yourself, and nothing else in the table names the container going. So the definition was the counterfeit and the cell was fine. I struck the definition and kept the element.
Joy that overwhelms containment.
Standing outside the self. From ekstasis. Not joy turned up. The container gone.
Under the new definition it moved to sit with the still states instead of the rising ones. That surprised me until I sat with it. Ecstasy is quiet. It is the moment you lose track of where you end.
Case file No. 03 · docket 2026-0809 · I was wrong
The one I got wrong.
AcquittedI brought this one myself. Awe-Quiet, "Awe after the overwhelm passes," one work against Awe's twelve. I called it a fading tail, a phase of its parent, and I put that in writing.
Maslow overturned me. His peak experience against his plateau experience is this exact split: acute and rare on one side, serene and trainable on the other, "achieved, learned, earned by long, hard work." Awe-Quiet is not the echo of Awe. It is its own room, and it was there the whole time I was arguing against it.
Awe · ReverenceThe peak. Acute, rare, it arrives and takes the body. 12 works carry it. The storm.
Awe-Quiet · Settled-AweThe plateau. Serene, trainable, earned by long, hard work. One work carries it, honestly. The shoreline after.
Called: a fade-out of Awe · Actually: its own room
Case file No. 04 · docket 2026-0809 · filed in the wrong family
Envy was sitting in the wrong family.
RelocatedI called G7 the self-conscious family and sat four in it: Shame, Guilt, Pride, Envy. Three belonged. Tangney's quartet is shame, guilt, embarrassment, pride, and the difference is where the eye goes. Shame, guilt, embarrassment and pride all turn back on you, on the self being seen. Envy looks across the room at somebody else.
So Envy went to G6 Corrosive and sat beside Contempt, the other feeling that eats what it looks at. Embarrassment took the empty chair. It is the one where you have done nothing wrong and you still want the floor to open, because somebody watched you fumble it.
Case file No. 05 · dockets 2026-0809 + 2026-0811 · seven added
The seven who passed the test.
AdmittedSeven words stood at the door over the two days and all seven got in. Each one names a state a work can put you into, and each one covers ground nothing already in the table covered. They took the numbers the deletions freed up and the slots I had been holding. Nothing else moved.
Five of the seven are in no work yet. That is on purpose. An element names a feeling a work can give you. It does not need a work to earn its place. These seven wait for the piece that needs them, the same as the five cells I am holding dark.
Shame and Guilt both point the judgment down. Nothing in the table pointed it up. A table that can only name the fall is half a table. The cell went in, and To Become Worth Destroying claimed it after.
No neighbor covered it. Craving is objectless desire, Admiration is upward regard without the sting. Envy is the one that has both the aim and the wound.
Solitude was built to keep this out. Being alone as a condition, not as something missing. That was the right call, and it left the kind of alone that hurts with nowhere to sit.
Missing from every framework I had leaned on, all over the counterfactual research. Guilt here is moral, the line you crossed. Regret is the better door, open the whole time, that you walked past.
Tangney's fourth chair, the one I had missed. Nothing moral in it. You are just seen mid-mistake, by people you have to keep facing afterward.
I argued against this one myself: orientation, not felt state. The table already holds orientations, so the argument separated nothing. Eight sacred pieces were reaching for Hope when they meant belief. The word exists now. Not one of those formulas has been rewritten to use it.
Lorca's dark spirit, the thing that comes up through a performer when the performance stops being a performance. Any working artist knows the night it showed up. It held against Lorca on all three claims.
Case file No. 06 · both dockets · five turned down
The ones I turned away.
RefusedGluttony did not get in. It is something a body does, not something a picture does to you, and what it feels like from the inside is already sitting in the table under Craving. Same ruling for Lust, which is Craving plus Longing, and Sloth, which is Weariness plus Resignation. Vices are conduct. The table holds experience.
Amusement and Awkwardness were harder. Both are real categories in the research and neither is here. The pieces I would have admitted them on were the handful named after tracks, so the evidence was the song and not the work. Nothing else in the catalog asked for either word. Admitting them anyway would have finished somebody else's table.
Five reserved cells stay dark, and that is what they are for. The day the work goes there, they get their symbols.
NoteTriumph never even came up. Cowen and Keltner tested it and it did not hold up as its own category, it kept collapsing into pride and joy. So it was never a hole in the table, it only ever looked like one.
Eighty cells for feeling, two days spent tearing them apart, all of it written down. I had already answered why, a month before I started.
Life is like this, by this age, you're watching friends getting married, people having kids, settling into their lifestyles, preparing themselves for the rest of their lives, done chasing dreams, it's like that cliffhanger mission in Modern Warfare 2, you're climbing with those ice picks, altitude getting higher, the ground nowhere in sight, all your peers are either climbing, have fallen, or have the tools to station themselves on this ice wall for an indefinite amount of time, you climb, the weather gets colder, harsher, it becomes harder to convince yourself to keep climbing, until the weather is clear, until you're above these storm-riddled clouds, climbing this ice wall.
Making art since 12. Eighteen years on the wall. Turning 30. Every cell in this table is a handhold, and I am not putting my weight on one I did not test.
Then I put the formulas on trial.
A table can be right and still lie where it gets used. Two days after the cells settled I held every formula against the work it names: fifty-four pieces, two hundred twenty-three element judgments, each one ruled confirmed, defensible, weak or wrong against the pixels themselves.
Point at any mark for its ruling. The dotted ones name their piece. Choose a verdict to hold the ledger to it.
Open the workThe first pass read pixels alone and came back ugly. It was reading the paintings without the statements, which is half of every piece, so I ran the whole thing again with each statement in evidence. The worst of it dissolved on contact. The craving called invented in Cheers Club is its lyric, word for word. The kneeling mother called fiction in Prayers by the Healing Altar is her statement's entire subject. Deluge walked out untouched, reading like the poem had been written from the table.
WEAK and SUPPORTED is an authorial claim a viewer can be taught to see. It stands.
WEAK and SILENT is an orphan. It goes.
WRONG, or CONTRADICTED by the statement, is a defect. Nothing saves it.
My own piece overruled me.
I put Contempt in OBSERVATION's formula. It is not in the pixels, and the statement says the opposite of it in writing. The piece won. The whole check on this one piece is The Tribunal.
Not to judge. To witness.
Stand.
The eleven reweights all shared one mistake and it was mine every time: the lead element named where the statement ends up while the image holds the moment before it. Relief arrived. Peace arrived. Hope fulfilled. The destination stayed in the formula and dropped to a single. The pixels lead now.
The one I keep coming back to: every gap this turned up pointed at an element the table already holds. Not one pointed at an element the table lacks. The table held. The way I had been using it did not always.
Most of what I deleted was mine. The costume words, the clinical hyphen, the padding that made a thin family look finished. Nobody outside this room was ever going to be the problem.
Seventy-five named. Five held dark on purpose. Every element carries a definition, the word it came from, what it feels like from the inside, how it stands against its neighbors, and what it does in a work. Every formula has stood in front of its own pixels and its own statement and been made to answer for both. You can check any line of it against the work it names.
This is not finished. The day a work arrives carrying a feeling this table cannot name, a reserved cell gets its symbol, and I do all of this again.
