01 · The ladder

Heat has a color, and it only runs one road.

Anything hot enough to glow obeys the same law. An ember starts deep red near 1,000 kelvin, and if you push the temperature the glow climbs through orange and yellow into white, and if you keep pushing it, past anything a forge can do, it crosses white into blue. Red at the cold end, blue at the hot end, and nothing else on the road. The coolest stars in the sky are deep red. The hottest stars are blue. Physicists call the law blackbody radiation, and the sky has been running the demonstration the whole time.

Green never turns up anywhere on it, because a star peaking in green throws so much red and blue past the peak that the eye adds it all back to white, so the road runs red, orange, yellow, white, blue-white, blue, and a green star cannot be made.

02 · Composition

What the light is made of.

Temperature sets a star's color. The atoms in its atmosphere set which wavelengths go missing out of that color, and those wavelengths never move: hydrogen cuts at 656.3 nanometres in every star that has hydrogen, in every galaxy, at every temperature. The letters below run O B A F G K M rather than alphabetically because the first catalogue sorted stars A onward by how strong their hydrogen lines looked, and Annie Jump Cannon reordered the surviving letters by temperature after classifying some 350,000 spectra by eye. Pick one and put its light through the slit.

03 · The artifact

APOCALYPSE, read as a sky full of stars.

The world comes in on fire. A forest going. A coast going. A screen that will not stop handing it to you, scan line after scan line. It enters at ember, the color of things going out, and it keeps entering. One flash wears the color of the sun, because it is a detonation. This is the weather you were raised in. You watched all of it.

Then the wanting. Water, and more water. The sky over it. The black past the sky. Somewhere far from here, in the waves, in orbit, anywhere the news does not reach. That longing arrives in blue, and blue is the same fire further along, what it keeps doing once it is finished being red. I went to that color for quiet for years before I knew what it was made of.

In the middle stands the figure. It is you. You are blurred, because you are the one thing you never get to see clearly. A darker shape stands beside you, close enough to touch. You are what arrived. The burning you were made to watch. The water you wanted. The far places you never got to. None of it stayed outside. It is in there now, still burning, in the color you go to for quiet.

04 · The second artifact

SURRENDER, a moment that is neither before nor after.

The form you carried has set down. The next one has not arrived. This canvas holds that moment as a temperature. Above the line is the hot end, cobalt past anything a star can reach, the body still becoming. Below it is the ember, the form already set down, and the face has gone red. Between them a black seam that emits nothing, because nothing has arrived in it yet.

The two frames came stacked, split by that void. Neither was asked for. Every attempt to merge them into one body broke the anatomy, so the seam stayed. The arched body above and the profile below are one figure on either side of an interval that does not resolve.

Run the cursor end to end and the piece takes turns. Low on the ladder only the red face survives the cut. High on it only the cobalt and the body lit inside it. The black never lights at any setting. Hold there. That is the interval, and it is the part the title is named for.

05 · Working from the source

I read the palette off the sky.

Most color theory is grounded in the eye. Goethe treated color as perception, Albers studied what colors do to each other, and both of them are right about what happens after the light lands. Further back, at the source, deep red is what matter does when it barely burns and deep blue is what it does when it burns hardest. Every canvas that runs those two poles is quoting the sky's own thermometer.

I was reaching for these colors long before I understood them. The deepest reds and deepest blues in this catalog are the two ends of the only road heat knows, and a collector who lives with one starts to read temperature before subject. That is the slow part of living with a picture, and it is the part I make for.

Two colors kept finding me. Same fire, both ends of it.
